Detailed description of Tam O Shanter, Hills Course, CLOSED 2018

Tam O'Shanter Public Golf Course is a Public, 36 hole golf facility located in Canton, Ohio. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses. They are The Hills Course & The Dales Course.

The Hills Course opened in 1931. The course was designed by Merle Paul.

Merle Paul, the designer of the Hills Course, was associated with Macomber throughout the development of the Dales Course. Leonard Macomber designed the Dales Course after working on other golf projects under the legendary architect Donald Ross.

At the opening ceremony for the Hills Course, the first two players off the tee were professionals Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen

Both the Hills and Dales courses are traditional designs in the Donald Ross tradition.

The Hills Course, built on hilly terrain, features undulating greens. The most difficult hole on the Hills Course is #3, a 413-yard, par 4, requiring a long tee shot, then an approach shot to a severely undulating green.  The ladies' par is actually 75 for both the Hills and Dales Courses.

Par for the course is 70. From the back tees, the course plays to 7,362 yards. From the forward tees, the course plays to a par-71 and the course measures 5,000 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 16, a par-5 that plays to 537 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 12, a par-3 that plays to 133 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 3, this 413-yard par-4 challenge is the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 18, a 279 yard par-4.

Tam O'Shanter closed operations in 2018.

The nearly 300 acres that were the Hills and Dales courses of Tam O'Shanter was sold, The majority of the land—225 acres—were purchased by Stark Parks, with 205 acres to become passive parkland, and 20 acres to go to Jackson Township, Ohio for soccer fields. Commercial development is planned on 62 acres.
